Catch up on all the good information shared during our September 2023 installment of our What Matters Webinar Series, led by our Water Energy Efficiency Task Force chairs Scott Houston and Kris Murray.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates 3-4% of national electricity consumption, equivalent to approximately 56 billion kilowatts, or $4 billion, is used to provide drinking water and wastewater services each year. Water and wastewater utilities are typically the largest consumers of energy in municipalities, often accounting for 30-40% of total energy consumed. Finding innovative ways to reduce energy use by water and wastewater utilities brings many benefits.

Watch the webinar video on demand, read the Q&A and chat transcripts, and view the powerpoint slide decks shared by our panelists. This webinar took place on September 21, 2023.

Our expert panel on “Equity, Access and Affordability” in California water is now available for viewing! The panel is also the launch of SCWC’s new Equity, Access and Affordability Task Force to be chaired by Anatole Falagan and Mayor Acquanetta Warren. Wherever you are in California, dealing with equity, access and affordability of water is going to take collaboration and coalition building. We believe Southern California Water Coalition is well-equipped to do this work, given the diversity of membership and the region we are in. We look forward to rolling up our sleeves and facing this issue head-on. This event took place in Ontario, California, on July 23, 2021.

Our August 10, 2021, workshop on “A Strategic Approach to Integrate Stormwater and Sewer Systems” is now available for viewing! Recent implementation of multi‐benefit stormwater projects and programs have been gaining momentum throughout Southern California, especially within Los Angeles County. These projects are intended to provide benefits of increasing water supply, improving water quality, and providing tangible community benefits. However, unless these projects capture and infiltrate water in areas that augment groundwater, or the captured stormwater is used directly on‐site, then no water supply benefit is achieved. The expert panel discusses these issues as well as a guide for cities on how to implement the strategy and how to approach wastewater agencies about working together.

These forever chemicals have been identified as an emerging contaminant and have found their way into some of our water systems. Discover what experts are thinking about when it comes to understanding and addressing PFAS in our water supply during Southern California Water Coalition’s Water Quality Matters webinar on February 19.

The development of treatment technologies, that can reliably, sustainably, and cost effectively remove PFAS from water and maximize the use of our water resources is a critical short-term step.

This SCWC program will explore PFAS, what it is, how we can treat the existing conditions and explore long-term solutions that replace these chemicals to ensure the protection of future generations’ access to water today and for tomorrow. Register HERE.
